What an INCREDIBLE Semester!
We want to welcome GUNTER Magazine to our community and I thought sharing a little bit about our first semester would be a great way to kick-off the GISD spotlight of this magazine! We came into the 2018-19 school year with BIG dreams! After winning the State Championship in football in 2016, being named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School and winning a National Championship in FFA in 2018, we truly believed that “The Best is Yet to Come” for Gunter ISD!
This past semester has already lived up to those words with our athletic teams having a banner semester: State Semi-Finalist in Football, Regional Finalists in Volleyball, a State Qualifier in Cross Country and 6th place at UIL State Cheer! Not to mention our boys & girls basketball teams who look to be playoff-bound already. We also signed five athletes to compete at the collegiate level in football, basketball and softball!
In the Fine Arts, we launched a brand new Art program in grades 7-12 and our students are already producing showcase-worthy work. In the performing arts, our Middle School Students won multiple recognitions for their One Act Play. In our music programs, we advanced 11 students to the Area Competition for Choir and 4 students to the Area Competition for Band. And we advanced a record-number of 3 students to the elite All-State Choir and 1 student as an Alternate for All-State Band!
While our success in extracurricular programs is a highlight for many of our students and families, the focus on academic performance has been the key for decades in Gunter ISD! This past year our 64 graduates earned over $2.5 million in scholarships & awards sending our graduates all over the country including Duke University, University of Texas, Oregon State University & Baylor University. This year we already have recognized 2 students who earned National Merit Scholarship honors, had one student accepted to MIT and another who won the Presidential Scholarship at Austin College. This focus on academics starts early and we were excited to launch Academic UIL teams from Gunter Elementary.
Leadership and integrity are character traits we focus on in Gunter ISD and it was exciting to see three of our students earn the prestigious Eagle Scout rank for the Boy Scouts and another student about to complete the final steps to earn the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Our FFA students are deep into their competition season and have already won numerous awards in speaking and judging. GISD also had the very first Path to Plate Ambassador representing Texas.
And probably the best indicator of the kind of semester we’ve had in Gunter ISD is last week’s mid-year update from the UIL on the best schools in Texas – and Gunter is sitting in 1st place for 3A schools! We’re looking forward to a GREAT rest of the year! Congratulations to our students and staff on the incredible accomplishments we’ve had already!
